A sourcing agent works with one factory, and that factory needs the run to be worth setting a line over. Their floor becomes your rule. Put the same brief in front of several manufacturers and the floor stops being one number, which is the whole reason we can say yes to a run of one.

Where the number comes from
A minimum order quantity is a factory covering its setup: the screens, the dyes, the machine time lost switching a line over. A sourcing agent working with one factory inherits that floor and passes it to you as a rule.
What changes with a network
Put the same brief in front of several manufacturers and the floor stops being one number. There is usually a route that fits the run you actually want, including a run of one.
Volume still moves the price
The more you order, the lower the unit cost gets. That has not been repealed. What changes is that volume decides what you pay, not whether we will make it.
Sample first, commit later
You order samples, hold them, change what you do not like, lock the specs. Production runs from there. Nobody should be committing to five hundred units of something they have never touched.
